A full Texas Hold’em table typically has nine or ten players; any less and the game may be referred to as short handed. To determine who begins the game a single card is dealt to each player; high card will be the first dealer. The dealer position is indicated by a white plastic chip referred to as the button, which is also what the dealer position is called, sometimes referred to as being on the button. After each round of play, sometimes called a hand, the dealer button rotates to the left, ensuring that everyone gets to play in this and all other positions. - Each player is dealt two cards face down. These are called your hole or pocket cards.

- Much like most games of poker, players can call, raise, or fold.
- After the betting round ends, the dealer discards the top card of the deck. This is called a burn card. This is done to prevent cheating.
- The dealer then flips the next three cards face up on the table. These cards are called the flop. These are communal cards that anyone can use in combination with their two pocket cards to form a poker hand.
- There is another round of betting starting with the player to the left of the dealer.
- After the betting concludes, the dealer burns another card and flips one more onto the table. This is called the turn card. Players can use this sixth card now to form a five card poker hand.
- The player to the left of the dealer begins another round of betting. In many types of games, this is where the bet size doubles.
- Finally, the dealer burns a card and places a final card face up on the table. This is called the river. Players can now use any of the five cards on the table or the two cards in their pocket to form a five card poker hand.
- There is one final round of betting starting with the player to the left of the dealer.
- After that, all of the players remaining in the game begin to reveal their hands. This begins with the player to the left of the last player to call. It’s called the showdown. You won’t find many differences in rules between the poker games you find in a typical casino/cardroom compared the rules in an online poker room. As far as promotion features go, some cardrooms and online sites have jackpots for high hands, bad beat jackpots or even "rack attacks" where they place a rack of chips in the pot and whoever wins the next hand gets it all. So if both online poker rules and casino poker rules are usually identical then is it worth even writing about the other differences? I think so. I’ve played a lot of both online texas holdem and regular texas holdem at casinos/cardrooms and it is much different. Except when play money can be turned in for promotional stuff (clothing, books, poker chips), winning or losing play money makes zilch difference. But if you are trying to get better, you aren’t playing for play money. Simply put, you are playing to learn.
The currency of real money poker games is just that, real money. That is the point of the game. Online play money games are wholly different. They are like "implied odds".
